About the Art Group
The double-ended aims of the Cullercoats Methodist Church Community Art Group are to provide opportunities and facilities in order to advance the education, appreciation and practice of creative arts and crafts. This is for people of all ages, irrespective of their religious beliefs, improving their quality of life; providing them with companionship and mutual support in a safe environment.
We have 30 members so far, of which are mainly retired individuals (age range 55-80+), but we welcome all ages. It seeks to support the elderly members of the community, and although we gather at the Cullercoats Methodist Church, it is open to all regardless of their age and religion.
Art is therapeutic and helps individuals coping strategies. The group also provides much needed companionship, understanding and mutual support. The self expressive nature of Art Work assists the individual to lift their self esteem and self worth. Also, to improve confidence and the quality of their lives.
We are a Community Art Group and believe we're here to enjoy an afternoon's relaxation. It's about friendship, fellowship and supporting each other. And that to us is as important (or more) that the finished works.
We meet in Cullercoats Methodist Church every Monday 1.30pm - 3.30pm. We're self funding and we pay £10.00 each, 10 weeks in advance and then it is £1.00 pre-weekly attendance. We do have Professional Local Artists as tutors on a regular basis. This provides a unique opportunity to gain an appreciation of the creative processes of Local Artists and ask them the burning questions about their techniques and inspiration, bringing more diversity and variety to the groups experiences.
The group has become well established, providing a worth while service to the local community providing friendship, fellowship, compassion, empathy and group support. As a result the group has attracted numerous awards over the past few years.
